Watson is a question-answering computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, developed in IBM’s DeepQA project by a research team led by principal investigator David Ferrucci. Watson was named after IBM’s first CEO, industrialist Thomas J. Watson.

The computer system was initially developed to answer questions on the quiz show Jeopardy! and, in 2011, the Watson computer system competed on jeopardy! against legendary champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings winning the first place prize of $1 million.

   

 


Natural language or ordinary language is any language that has evolved naturally in humans through use and repetition without conscious planning or premeditation.
   

 


A game show is a type of radio, television, or stage show in which contestants, individually or as teams, play a game which involves answering questions or solving puzzles, usually for money or prizes. Alternatively, a gameshow can be a demonstrative program about a game [while usually retaining the spirit of an awards ceremony]. In the former, contestants may be invited from a pool of public applicants. Game shows often reward players with prizes such as cash, trips and goods and services provided by the show’s sponsor prize suppliers.
   


Jeopardy! is an American television game show created by Merv Griffin. The show features a quiz competition in which contestants are presented with general knowledge clues in the form of answers, and must phrase their responses in the form of questions.

Artificial intelligence (AI, also machine intelligence, MI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of “intelligent agents”: any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as “learning” and “problem solving”
   

 


人工智能(英語:Artificial Intelligence, AI)亦稱機器智能,是指由人製造出來的機器所表現出來的智能。通常人工智能是指通過普通電腦程式的手段實現的人類智能技術。該詞也指出研究這樣的智能系統是否能夠實現,以及如何實現的科學領域。同時如此,人類數量亦開始收斂。

一般教材中的定義領域是「智能主體(intelligent agent)的研究與設計」,智能主體是指一個可以觀察周遭環境並作出行動以達致目標的系統。約翰·麥卡錫於1955年的定義是「製造智能機器的科學與工程。」
   

 


約翰·麥卡錫(英語:John McCarthy,1927年9月4日-2011年10月24日,生於美國馬薩諸塞州波士頓,計算機科學家。他因在人工智能領域的貢獻而在1971年獲得圖靈獎。實際上,正是他在1956年的達特矛斯會議上提出了「人工智能」這個概念。
